Well known fashion designer Anna-Marie Claasen gave learners that are interested in studying fashion a fabulous opportunity to get a real experience of what is to come by letting them go through the motions of designing their own range with guidance in sketching as well as visiting the fabric stores to select suitable fabrics for their designs. They were invited to see factories that do various types of printing and embroidery on fabrics.

Bridgeway design students attended a two-day workshop presented by the Greenside Design Center in collaboration with Terrestrial, an award-winning design agency. Learners and teachers were taught to implement the design thinking process from defining problems, to developing possible solutions, and experiencing the true sense of a design working environment. These skill sets are universal tools for any career.  The final product was presented as a one-minute movie, and the learners had a wonderful time.

The Crafters and Makers Guild is an afternoon workshop at which learners are taught a variety of craft-related skills such as sewing, knitting, and bead work. They have done bead weaving for hand-made jewellery, made evening bags and shopping bags, designed their own bead work patterns to decorate their bags, and have learned the foundational skills to be able to knit garments

 

Cultural enrichment opportunities are encouraged as learners are introduced to live theatre performances for the first time in Grade 8 and 9. They are taught to analyse what they have seen, by writing theatre reviews. They apply their experiences to their drama studies at school as well. Our local theatres are a wonderful way to expose the learners to the workings of a theatre – wardrobe, props and set design, sound and lighting. We have visited the Soweto Theatre to learn about public art and architecture related to theatres. Learners are given opportunities to find out first-hand about careers in the performing arts by meeting people who work in such careers – lighting and sound technicians, actors, and designers. We have also visited the Roodepoort Theatre to see amateur drama productions and Monte Casino’s Pieter Toerien Theatre to experience a professional production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

 

Being community conscious is an important trait that we want every learner to have. Learners select a charitable organization and are responsible for arranging the event. Some of the organizations we have supported in the past are Princess Alice Adoption Home, FORA and the Cancer Awareness campaigns.
